ASO tools range from a $9-a-month Mac app to enterprise contracts that never show a price. Most roundups rank them as if every reader were a growth team at a large publisher. This one is written for indie iOS developers and small studios: people who build the app, write the store page and press submit themselves. We make Appsium, so we have listed it first and been as plain as we can about what it does not do.
How we compared the tools
ASO work for an indie app splits into two halves. The first is knowing: which keywords people search, how hard they are to rank for, where you rank today, what competitors do. The second is doing: writing a title, subtitle and keyword field that fit Apple's limits, localizing them, making screenshots, avoiding rejections and getting it all into App Store Connect. If the terms are new to you, start with our guide to what ASO is.
For each tool we looked at:
- Which stores it covers (iOS only, or iOS and Google Play)
- Keyword research, rank tracking and how much history it keeps
- Market data such as download and revenue estimates
- Help with producing the listing: writing, localization, screenshots, review checks, publishing
- Public pricing and whether you can start without talking to sales

Do not skip Apple's own tools
Before paying for anything, use what Apple gives you. App Store Connect analytics shows impressions, product page views and conversion by source. If you run Apple Ads, its dashboard shows keyword popularity for terms you bid on. Pair those with a careful launch checklist and you can get surprisingly far on a first release.
How to choose
- Name your bottleneckIf you do not know which keywords to target, start with a research or tracking tool. If you know them but your listing, localizations or screenshots are weak, start with a production tool.
- Check your platformsNeed Google Play too? AppTweak, Appfigures, MobileAction, AppFollow or Sensor Tower. iOS only? Appsium and Astro are focused options.
- Decide if you need estimatesDownload and revenue estimates are valuable for market research, but most indie apps can grow without them.
- Match the price to your revenueA tool that costs more than your app earns is a hobby expense. Free plans and trials let you test before committing.
- Combine where it helpsA cheap tracker plus a production workspace often beats one expensive suite for an indie budget.
Mistakes to avoid when buying an ASO tool
Paying for data you will not act on. A dashboard with thousands of keywords and two years of history is only useful if you change your listing based on it. If you update metadata twice a year, a simpler tool and a calendar reminder may be enough.
Tracking keywords you cannot rank for. A high-volume term dominated by apps with hundreds of thousands of ratings is rarely worth the title space for a new app. Look for terms with real volume and difficulty you can realistically win, then grow from there.
Treating localization as translation. People in Germany or Japan do not search with translated English phrases. Whatever tool you choose, research keywords per market, and read our localization guide before you ship a new language.
Forgetting the conversion side. Ranking higher only helps if people tap Get. Screenshots, the icon and the first lines of your description decide that, and most keyword tools do not help with them.
Ignoring App Review. A rejected build delays every metadata change attached to it. Missing account deletion, Sign in with Apple rules or paywall terms are common and avoidable causes.
Keyword limits vs credits: two pricing models
Most ASO tools price by how many keywords you track and how much history you keep, which suits ongoing monitoring. Appsium prices by AI output instead: one credit balance covers metadata for a language (5 credits), a Pre-Review Check (10), an ASO research run (14), a full ASO analysis (18) or a screenshot image (2 to 8). Neither model is better in general. If you monitor many keywords every day, a keyword-based plan fits. If you produce new listings, languages and screenshots in bursts around releases, a credit model tends to fit better, and unused Appsium credit packs never expire.
Our picks by situation
- First app, no budget: Apple's own tools plus Appsium Free, or the Appfigures Starter plan.
- Solo developer, several iOS apps: Astro for tracking and Appsium Pro for writing, localizing, screenshots and publishing.
- Small studio selling in many countries: Appsium Studio for unlimited languages across 20 apps, plus a tracker you like.
- iOS and Android with a growth budget: AppTweak or MobileAction.
- Market research or investor reporting: Sensor Tower, or Appfigures Boost and above.
Whichever you pick, the fundamentals do not change: a clear title and subtitle, a full keyword field, screenshots that sell, real localization and a submission that avoids common rejections.

What is the best free ASO tool for iOS?
Start with what Apple gives you: App Store Connect analytics and, if you run Apple Ads, keyword popularity in the Apple Ads dashboard. For a free tool on top of that, Appfigures has a free Starter plan for analytics, and Appsium has a free plan with 30 one-time credits for keyword research, metadata writing and a Pre-Review Check on one app.
Which ASO tool is best for a solo iOS developer on a budget?
For daily keyword rank tracking, Astro at $108 a year is hard to beat if you use a Mac. For writing, localizing and shipping your listing, Appsium Pro at $24.99 a month covers 5 apps. Appfigures Monitor and MobileAction Lite are other low-cost options for tracking.
Do I need download and revenue estimates?
Most indie developers do not. Estimates help with market sizing and competitor research. If you need them, look at Sensor Tower, Appfigures Boost or higher, or AppTweak. Appsium and Astro do not provide them.
Which ASO tools support Google Play?
AppTweak, Appfigures, Sensor Tower, MobileAction and AppFollow cover both the App Store and Google Play. Appsium and Astro focus on the iOS App Store.
